At the start of the summer holidays, the Van Steen family – Blinker (13) , his sister Ellen (17), Mum and Dad – are impatiently looking forward to the annual village fete. But the party plans are thrown into disarray when an urgent telegram arrives from Burkina Faso. In the telegram, their foster child Saliou (12) asks the family to help project leader Ousmane with the building of a well and a bouli (a large artificial pond) in Borom-Borom. The bouli-project was made possible thanks to proceeds from the previous year’s village fete. And if the project isn’t finished by the end of the month, the ground on which it is to be built will be irreversibly sold to land speculators. Even though the family is not very financially secure, they leave for Burkina Faso straight away.
From the moment they arrive, The Sik, a sly and sneaky man, and Tonton, his accomplice, do everything in their power to boycott the whole project. Nothing can stop them from finding the biggest treasure in the world.
Fatoumata, the herb lady, gives the children a mysterious helpful hand. But is that enough?
